Initiative Description Volunteer Tasks
A Pearl to Wear Clothes Closet Gently used clothes are available year round. Persons who desire to shop can do so on Wednesdays from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and the 1st and 3rd Saturday from noon to 2:00 p.m. Volunteers are needed to sort clothes and assist two days a week
Dare to Care Weekly distribution of produce to residents of the Smoketown and Shelby Park communities from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Emergency food boxes are available Monday through Thursday from 9:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Volunteers to distribute produce on Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Healthy Hearts Initiative This initiative was established to provide information to the Smoketown and Shelby Park communities about the necessity of incorporating preventative measures into daily routines. This program consists of volunteers in the medical profession concerned that health issues be addressed in an effort to make the community aware of the importance of good health and agencies that provide various services. Aerobics classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A 13-week smoking cessation series is held on Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Volunteers are needed to help with blood pressure screenings, assist with monthly workshops, distribute educational materials regarding health, conduct First Aid and CPR trainings, and help with referrals to appropriate medical facilities and/or agencies.
Kingdom Academy After School Program Kingdom Academy offers homework help, reading & math skills development, and educationally enriching after-school activities. One-on-one instruction and individualized learning offered in a small classroom setting. A light snack will be provided daily. Program hours are Monday through Thursday from 3:00 p.m to 6:00 p.m. Volunteers are needed to provide homework help, computer time instruction, arts & crafts and other enrichment activities.
Grab-N-Go Midday Meal BCDC provides a midday meal on Saturday for the homeless from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Volunteers are needed to prepare and serve meals and clean the serving area from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
